Skandix Brings Back the Windshield Trim Set Saab 900 Convertible Owners Actually Need

A new Skandix windshield trim set solves a familiar problem for classic Saab 900 Convertible owners facing glass replacement.

Skandix’s new windshield trim set addresses one of the awkward repair points on the classic Saab 900 Convertible: replacing the glued front screen without damaging or improvising the surrounding trim.

Some Saab 900 Convertible parts only become urgent when the car is already in the workshop. The windshield trim set is one of them.

Skandix has introduced a newly produced front windshield trim set for the classic Saab 900 Convertible up to 1993, listed under part number 1024616. For owners of early 900 Cabriolets, this is not a cosmetic accessory. It is the part that often decides whether a cracked windshield can be replaced properly or whether the job turns into a compromise around the frame.

The reason is specific to the convertible. Unlike the Saab 900 sedan and hatchback, the classic Saab 900 Convertible uses a bonded front windshield. The trim and seal are installed on the glass before the windshield is bonded into the car. That detail makes glass replacement far less forgiving than on many other classic 900 body styles.

Why the old trim usually cannot be reused

On paper, windshield trim sounds like a simple part. On the Saab 900 Convertible, it is not.

When the original glass is cut out, the surrounding trim is almost always damaged. Skandix notes that the old strips are usually destroyed during removal because they are bonded into the assembly. That means the windshield cannot realistically be replaced while keeping the original trim intact.

This is where many owners and workshops have run into trouble. A cracked windshield may be available. The glass specialist may be ready to do the job. But without the correct trim set, the repair cannot be finished cleanly.

Universal profiles are not a proper answer either. The Saab 900 Convertible windshield frame has shaped corner sections, and the angles do not accept a generic rubber profile neatly. The result is often visible at the corners: poor fit, uneven lines, or a repair that looks acceptable only from a distance.

For a car whose upper body structure is already more sensitive than the closed 900, the windshield surround deserves correct parts.

The lower strip was the missing piece

Skandix has carried versions of the trim set before, including remaining stock and earlier reproduction work. The main problem in recent years was the lower trim strip, which had not been available for some time.

That absence forced owners and workshops into less convincing solutions. The lower edge of the windshield is not an area where rough improvisation ages well. It sits in a visually exposed position, catches water and dirt, and must work with the rest of the sealing system.

For the new production run, Skandix had the connectors reproduced and also had the lower strip remade according to the original dimensions. The company states that a special tool had to be built for this part, which explains why such a small-looking component required a more serious production effort.

That detail matters. Many Saab reproduction projects fail not because the idea is wrong, but because the small molded or shaped sections are too expensive to reproduce correctly for a limited market. Here, Skandix appears to have addressed the exact part that had made proper windshield replacement difficult.

Made for the 900 Convertible, not adapted from a generic profile

The new set is aimed specifically at the Saab 900 Cabriolet up to 1993. That focus is important because the convertible’s windshield arrangement is not the same as the sedan or hatchback.

The profile shape shows why a universal trim strip is not a clean substitute for the Saab 900 Convertible windshield frame. The bonded front screen requires a correctly shaped trim and sealing profile before installation.

The seal itself has been made in Germany for some time using the original pattern, according to Skandix. The company says the part has already been tested hundreds of times and was even supplied by Skandix to Saab. That gives this release more credibility than a simple aftermarket approximation.

For owners restoring or maintaining a classic 900 Convertible, this kind of part is easy to underestimate until the car needs glass work. Then it becomes essential.

A small reproduction part with a very practical impact

This Skandix release follows the same logic as the company’s recent work on difficult Saab brake components. The strongest reproduction projects are not always the most dramatic ones. They are the parts that remove a real repair blockage.

A Saab 900 Convertible can have excellent paint, a good roof, a clean interior and a healthy B202 or B212 drivetrain, but a cracked windshield still has to be replaced correctly. Without the correct trim and seal set, the job risks becoming visibly wrong or practically incomplete.

The new Skandix 1024616 windshield trim set gives owners and specialists a cleaner path. It covers the trim, connectors and lower strip needed for the front windshield installation on the classic 900 Convertible.

For many owners, that means one less reason to postpone a windshield job. For restoration shops, it means less time spent adapting parts that were never designed for the car. And for the Saab 900 Convertible itself, it means another body-specific component remains available instead of disappearing into used-stock luck and workshop improvisation.
