When a Legend Refuses to Be Forgotten: SAC Taiwan Restores a 1990 Saab 9000 2.0 Turbo

Some cars are simply too significant to disappear. This one found exactly the right person to make sure it never would.

There is a particular kind of Saab enthusiast who doesn’t just love these cars – they feel a sense of responsibility toward them. A quiet conviction that certain machines must be preserved, not because they are worth a fortune, but because they carry something irreplaceable. Hsiao Hsiang is exactly that kind of person.

Well known in Taiwan’s Saab community as the administrator of the SAAB 9000 SQUADRON – a forum dedicated entirely to Saab’s flagship sedan – Hsiao Hsiang has spent years as one of the most passionate advocates for the 9000 model line on the island. So when, in 2017, he discovered an abandoned and nearly forgotten Saab sitting idle in Nantou, it wasn’t really a question of whether he would bring it back. It was only a question of how.

Before the transformation – the 1990 Saab 9000 arrives at SAC’s workshop in need of everything. What looked like a forgotten relic was, in the right hands, a legend waiting to be reclaimed.

The Car: A 1990 Saab 9000 2.0, 185HP – Possibly the Last of Its Kind in Taiwan

What Hsiao Hsiang found in that garage was no ordinary old car. The vehicle was a 1990 Saab 9000 2.0 with 185 horsepower and a manual gearbox – a specification that, as far as anyone can determine, makes it likely the only surviving example of its exact configuration still in Taiwan. For a country that was once home to an active and enthusiastic Saab community, that distinction carries real weight.

The 9000 represented Saab at its most ambitious. Launched in 1984 and developed in collaboration with Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia under the Type Four project, it was Saab’s bold answer to the luxury sports sedan segment – longer, wider, faster, and more refined than anything the brand had produced before. The 2.0 turbo variant with the manual transmission was, in many ways, the purist’s choice: responsive, engaging, and unmistakably Saab in character.

By the time Hsiao Hsiang found it, though, the car had been sitting for years. Its condition was far from ideal. Most people would have seen a liability. He saw a car waiting to be called back to the road.

The Hunt for the Right Parts

What followed was not a quick project. Restoring a 30-year-old Saab to a standard worthy of its significance requires patience, resourcefulness, and a willingness to search the world for the right components. Hsiao Hsiang did exactly that.

Complete disassembly and paint preparation — every panel removed, every surface addressed. SAC Taiwan’s approach leaves nothing to chance.

From England, he sourced an original Carlsson aerodynamic body kit – one of the most sought-after period upgrades for the 9000, produced by the legendary Swedish tuning house that had a long and storied relationship with the Saab brand. From the United States, he tracked down an original boomerang steering wheel, the distinctive Saab design piece that gave drivers of that era a truly unique cockpit experience. And from Latvia, he found a single-side dual exhaust system – a sporting touch that gives the restored car its distinctive, purposeful voice.

Each part was chosen not for convenience, but for correctness. This was never going to be an approximation of the original. It was going to be the real thing, rebuilt from the ground up.

SAC’s Work: Restoring to Perfection

The mechanical and cosmetic restoration was carried out by the team at Scandinavia Asia Corporation (SAC) – Taiwan’s official Saab service organization and the team we have followed closely here on SaabPlanet through countless restoration stories over the years.

Every line, every surface, every detail restored to perfection. The 1990 Saab 9000 stands in SAC’s showroom flanked by decades of Saab history – and holds its own against all of them.

As the photographs from the workshop show clearly, the car was completely disassembled. The body shell entered SAC’s dedicated paint booth stripped down to bare metal, all glass masked, all panels removed – the kind of thorough preparation that separates a proper restoration from a cosmetic refresh. The deep navy blue finish that emerged from that process is not simply repainted. It is renewed, layer by layer, to match the original specification that left Trollhättan more than three decades ago.

The result, displayed proudly in SAC’s showroom floor alongside Saabs of every generation – from the 9-3 and 9-5 to a partially dismantled project car in the background – is a car that looks as though it arrived directly from the factory. The deep gloss of the bodywork, the crystal-clear headlamp lenses with their characteristic wiper arms, the period-correct alloy wheels, the twin exhaust tips emerging from beneath the rear valance – every detail speaks of care, knowledge, and genuine commitment to the car’s heritage.

More Than a Car

Hsiao Hsiang describes this Saab 9000 not as a vehicle, but as something that transcends the ordinary definition of transportation: a time capsule, a piece of Nordic history, something worth passing on. For most people, he acknowledges, it is simply a 30-year-old car. For him, it is a connection across time and distance to an automotive culture that refused to follow convention – and that produced, in doing so, some of the most distinctive machines ever built.

In Taiwan, a community that has supported and preserved the Saab name long after the brand’s formal end in 2011, that perspective is far from unusual. What is unusual is finding a car this rare, in the hands of an owner this devoted, restored by a team this capable.

Thanks to Hsiao Hsiang — and to the team at SACthis particular piece of Saab history will not be lost. It has been brought back, faithfully and fully, to exactly what it was always meant to be.

  • This is what SAAB’s passion should be: the preservation of a culturally enriching history.
That’s how it should be done. My compliments.

  • Absolutely stunning! I always liked the Saab 96 (puppy dog cars). But knew a girl who had a Sonnett, and truthfully, that turned me away from this great brand. I missed that awesome 9000 turbo and now have a Sportcombi, 2006 95, 2.3 turbo, plus others, Mercedes, Cadillacs, etc. I would still like to find a nice 9000 turbo.

  • Oh my God, I absolutely love those cars. That car in that first generation is hands-down, my number one favorite Saab of all time ever made. I had the privilege of driving a 1992 Saab 9000 Turbo with the 5 speed manual gearbox a few years ago and it was in the same scarab green color as my first car was which was a 1996 900 S.

  • Carlson spoilers and smoked rear lights/intermediate panel, they really sourced some serious parts for that restoration. Beautiful

  • Perfect Bank Job car, obviously never rob a bank BUT if you ever thought of doing it, this is what you want. One of the best getaway vehicles I’ve ever driven. Nothing will come near you driven correctly

  • Все гарно і чудово відновлений автомобіль , але чому не пишуть скільки коштує така реставрація автомобіля
