Two questions were enough to expose the strange economics of Saab ownership: the repair that hurt the wallet most, and the job every owner eventually learns to recognize before the garage does.
We asked the SaabPlanet community what the most expensive Saab part or repair had been, and whether saving the car still made sense. Then we asked which repair belongs to the shared Saab curriculum: DI cassette, CIM, sludge, EGR, DPF, heater bypass valve, fuel pump, rust, CPS, or something even more specific.
The answers were funny, painful, technically sharp, and often stubbornly affectionate – exactly what you’d expect from owners of cars whose market value often fails to explain their owner loyalty.

The Big-Ticket Items
Engines came up again and again as the single biggest expense. Owners told us about reconditioned and remanufactured engines for everything from a 1966 Monte Carlo two-stroke to a 2010 9-5 Aero, with prices ranging from a few hundred euros for a used unit out of a scrapyard to nearly £4,000 for a full rebuild on a classic 96. One enthusiast in the Netherlands described an entire engine-swapping odyssey on his 9-5 estate – turbo gone, “mayonnaise” in the exhaust, a failed bearing replacement, and finally a B235R engine from a donor car that’s now been running happily for over five years.
Gearboxes and transmissions weren’t far behind. Several owners reported transmission jobs in the $3,000–$4,000 range, often paired with a new clutch “because that’s what you do.” For one driver, a transmission swap on a 2004 9-3 Aero convertible was “definitely worth it but painful” – a sentiment that came up over and over.

Then there are the parts that sting because they’re so specific to Saab. The ABS/ESP module showed up repeatedly as a wallet-buster, with bills around $1,200 on a 2008 9-3. Haldex rear differentials on the all-wheel-drive cars topped £1,700 before fitting. Rear subframes – notoriously hard to source for the 9-3X – were called “expensive, hard to track down, but worth every penny.” Turbochargers were another recurring theme. On a Saab, the turbo is not an optional flourish. It defines the way many Aero, HOT, and Viggen models deliver torque, so several owners treated replacement as non-negotiable.
A few stories stood out for sheer drama. One owner’s 1992 900i got a new fuel filler neck shipped from overseas for around $300 – and he’s still driving it today. Another bought a complete Hirsch upgrade for a 9-5 twice. A third spent $1,500 on a new radiator for a 9-3 Aero, only to sell the car three weeks later for $1,200. And one Aussie Saabist recalled tracking down what was reportedly the last available C900 cluster gear in Sweden back in 2004 for a gearbox rebuild – only to lose the finished car entirely after leaving it with a “friend” in Australia.
Was It Worth It?
Here’s the thing: almost everyone said yes. “A Saab is always worth saving,” wrote one owner flatly. Another described a six-year, 100-hour fabrication and welding project to rescue a classic estate, calling it the most important investment he ever made in the car. Several people pointed out that the real cost wasn’t the parts – it was the labor, the hunt for increasingly rare components, or simply finding a mechanic who still understands these cars.
Of course, not every story had a happy ending. One owner admitted that replacing a fuel pump on a beloved 9000 CSE was the moment he realized the car’s electrics were on borrowed time, and that parts were only going to get scarcer and pricier. Another bought a 9-3 Aero wagon for a bargain and immediately needed a new AC compressor, then watched the radiator and catalytic converter fail soon after – “it’s a good thing the car was dirt cheap to begin with.” And a front-end collapse on a 9-5 wagon at 350,000 km led to turbo trouble that no local mechanic could diagnose, leaving that owner to conclude it wasn’t worth it “in hindsight.”
But the overwhelming mood was one of loyalty bordering on stubbornness. As one driver who’s poured £3,000-plus into a 2004 convertible put it: he doesn’t care what it costs, because he’d rather spend the money on a car he loves than buy “a new boring car.”
The Rite of Passage: One Repair Every Saab Owner Meets Eventually
When we asked what repair every Saab owner eventually runs into, a few names came up so often they practically became running jokes.
The DI cassette (Direct Ignition unit) was the clear champion, especially among 9-5 and OG 9-3 petrol owners – mentioned so many times that one owner said he used to carry a spare in the car, just in case, since at least it’s a quick roadside fix. That same crowd also traded stories about throttle bodies as part of the same familiar rotation.

Right behind it, especially among NG 9-3 owners, was the CIM – the Column Integration Module – one of those electronic faults that can make a modern Saab feel far more complicated than its age suggests. NG 9-3 owners also tended to name ECU issues, the AMP1 amplifier, ABS modules, door locks, and fuel level sensors as part of their own version of the “eventually you’ll meet this” list.
Sludge deserves careful wording. It’s most strongly associated with certain B205/B235-era cars, especially early 9-5 and OG 9-3 examples with a poor oil-change history or outdated PCV systems – one owner pointed out that it was really only a problem for a specific run of model years, so not every Saab owner has to deal with it. Still, the advice from experienced Saab technicians was clear: if you buy one of these cars, pulling the oil pan and checking the pickup is cheap insurance, even if everything looks fine – because when it’s bad, it’s really bad.
The crankshaft position sensor (CPS) was another classic, showing up across multiple generations and earning at least one heartfelt “bloody crankshaft position sensor” from a frustrated owner. The heater bypass valve also made several appearances – including from one person who said they’d “just recently learned about” it the hard way.
Beyond those headliners, the list of “eventually you’ll meet this part” got delightfully long: fuel level sensors and fuel pumps, water pumps (one 99 reportedly went through four of them), cabin blower motors seized by clogged drains, weak manual gearbox reverse synchros on the 9-5, window regulators and rollers, door lock actuators, and – for the classic 900 and 99 crowd – the gear-change guide spring and a manual gear knob that has a habit of popping off at the worst possible moment (one driver said it even happened to him mid-lap at the Nürburgring).
And then there’s rust. For the older cars especially, more than one owner simply answered the question with a single word: rust. Whether it’s the front wings on a classic 900 (one owner remembered a £450 repair plus around 100 spot welds) or wheel arches on the newer 9-3, corrosion is the great equalizer.
The Invoice Never Tells the Whole Story
If there’s one thing this thread proved, it’s that Saab ownership is less about the car staying perfectly reliable and more about the relationship you build with it while keeping it alive. As one commenter summed it up: the list of repairs is endless, but every single time, the answer to “was it worth it?” comes back yes.
So whether your DI cassette just died for the third time, you’re nursing a 30-year-old gearbox along with careful shifting, or you’re staring down a quote for a new turbo with a wince – you’re in good company. The invoice may look irrational to everyone else. To a Saab owner, it often reads like another chapter in the car’s history.
