Saab Club Nederland’s Maas- en Waalrit 2026: 100km, 50 Members, One Barbecue

Fifty members and their Saabs traced the Maas and Waal dikes from Metropole in Wijchen to a member's driveway along the route, where the barbecue settled what the heat could not.

A row of Saab club cars, spanning classic 900s to modern 9-3 and 9-5 models, parked outside Autoservice Bunningen during a stop on the route.

Saab Club Nederland Reroutes The Maas- en Waalrit Around The Heat, Still Covers 100 Kilometers Of River Dikes

Saab Club Nederland‘s regional team ran its annual Maas- en Waalrit this past Saturday, adjusting the route to account for a heat wave rather than postponing the event outright. Fifty members brought their Saabs to the start point at the Metropole complex in Wijchen, a multi-brand automotive site that also houses an Alfa Romeo showroom, where registration opened at 10:00 and the club’s blue and white feather flag marked out the meeting area.

The rally covered roughly 100 kilometers along the dikes lining the Waal and Maas rivers through the Gelderland region, a route chosen for its flat, well-shaded roads rather than for speed or technical driving. Organizers built in a stop where swimming was possible, a practical concession to the temperatures rather than a planned highlight, and the route also passed several castles along the river valleys before turning toward the day’s second stop.

From The Dikes To A Member’s Driveway

The convoy’s final stop was the home of club member Pieter, where the day closed with a barbecue in the driveway. Cars parked along the brick paving outside the house while members gathered around folding tables for food and conversation, a low-key finish that matched the rest of the day’s unhurried pacing through the dikes.

Along the way, several participants stopped at Autoservice Bunningen, a Saab specialist workshop, where a row of club cars lined up outside the garage. The stop reflects how regional Saab club drives in the Netherlands tend to work: routes are planned loosely around members’ homes, specialist garages, and known meeting points rather than fixed checkpoints.

A Mixed Fleet Across Three Generations

The cars on the road and in the Metropole parking lot spanned three distinct generations of the brand. Among the classic-era cars was a white three-door Saab 900 Coupe riding on a five-speed manual gearbox, alongside a dark blue four-door 900 sedan and a deep green Saab 9000 sedan on wire wheels. The newer end of the fleet included several Saab 9-3 and 9-5 models: a dark blue 9-5 SportWagon, a black 9-3 SportCombi, and silver and black 9-3 convertibles parked nose to tail along the Metropole’s covered walkway.

That spread, classic 900s and 9000s running alongside later 9-3 and 9-5 models, is fairly typical for Saab Club Nederland’s regional drives, where the club’s roughly 2,400 members are spread across multiple generations of ownership rather than concentrated around a single era of the brand.

Fifty Cars, One Afternoon

Saab Club Nederland thanked Pieter and his partner Yanou for opening their home for the barbecue, and credited the day’s turnout to the members who showed up despite the weather. With fifty cars and their owners covering 100 kilometers of dike roads in a single afternoon, the Maas- en Waalrit stands as one of several regional drives the club runs each year, smaller in scale than its anniversary gatherings or international tours but built on the same template of car, road, and a shared destination at the end.
