A turn signal stalk that refuses to remain engaged is the kind of fault that can slowly become part of daily life with an older car. Push the lever down for a left turn, and it immediately drops back. Hold it with one finger through the junction. Try again at the next corner. Eventually, what began as a minor irritation becomes another item on the list of aging components that need attention.
For owners of the classic Saab 900, there is now a better answer than searching for another used switch that may already have decades of wear behind it. German Saab and Volvo parts specialist Skandix has announced that its turn signal switch repair kit for the Saab 900 is available again, after the previous manufacturer stopped supplying the crucial replacement housing.
The important detail is that this kit does not require the entire turn signal switch assembly to be discarded. It addresses the specific mechanical wear inside the stalk mechanism that causes the lever to lose its ability to remain in the selected position. For a car whose youngest examples are now over three decades old, repairing the failed element rather than replacing the complete assembly is exactly the kind of parts solution that increasingly determines whether small faults remain manageable.

Skandix announced the return of the kit on July 10, 2026, listing it under part number 1059601 for the classic Saab 900 up to 1993, with compatibility stated for models from 1979 onward. The company also specifies that the repair kit can be used on control stalks with or without cruise control.
The Fault Is Mechanical – and Surprisingly Specific
The symptom is easy to recognize. The driver moves the turn signal stalk into position, but the lever will not stay there. It either drops or immediately returns, forcing the driver to hold it manually to keep the indicators operating.
According to Skandix, the cause lies inside the switch housing. There are two triangular tabs in the mechanism, each originally formed with a groove into which a drive pin engages. After years of repeated operation, those grooves can be worn smooth. Once that happens, the pin no longer has a defined point at which to engage, and the stalk loses its ability to remain locked in position.
This distinction matters because the kit is designed for mechanical failure of the retaining mechanism. It is not a universal cure for every Saab 900 indicator problem. A switch suffering from failed internal electrical contacts will require a different repair or replacement. Owners therefore need to diagnose the fault correctly before ordering parts: a stalk that physically refuses to stay engaged is the target problem; a stalk that remains in position but fails to operate the lamps may have an electrical fault instead.
That is also why this is a particularly satisfying repair from an engineering perspective. The rest of the switch may remain perfectly serviceable. Its electrical contacts can still function, its stalk can be intact, and its cruise-control controls, where fitted, may work normally. One small worn area inside the housing can nevertheless make the complete assembly frustrating or unsafe to use.
Replacing only that worn element preserves far more of the original component.
Why Skandix Had to Produce the Housing Itself
The kit itself is not entirely new. Skandix says it had offered a repair kit with a new housing for some time, but the manufacturer eventually discontinued production and could no longer supply it.
The demand, however, did not disappear with the supplier.
Rather than simply removing the item from its catalog, Skandix arranged for a new cast housing to be produced and assembled the repair kit itself. That decision brought part number 1059601 back into availability.
This is an increasingly important pattern in Saab maintenance. The cars themselves have proved capable of remaining in service far beyond the period during which conventional automotive supply chains normally support a model. The weakest point is therefore often not the fundamental engineering of the car, but the availability of one relatively small component buried inside a larger assembly.

The indicator stalk repair kit belongs to the same category of parts support, although on a much smaller physical scale. Its value comes from identifying precisely what fails and manufacturing only what is needed to make the original assembly functional again.
What the Saab 900 Repair Kit Actually Contains
According to the Skandix installation documentation, the kit contains a new metal housing, a 2 mm drill bit, a countersink tool, two screws and silicone grease. Detailed fitting instructions are also provided.
The listed tools required for the job include a drill, tweezers or small long-nose pliers, a cleaning cloth and a screwdriver. This is therefore a genuine component-level repair rather than a simple remove-and-replace operation. The owner or technician must dismantle the switch carefully and transfer the necessary internal parts into the new housing.
That point should not be minimized. Steering-column switch assemblies contain small components that need to be handled methodically, and anyone uncomfortable with disassembling the mechanism should consider leaving the job to an experienced Saab specialist. The attraction of the kit is not that every owner can necessarily complete the work in a few minutes. It is that a repair path exists at all, with a dedicated replacement housing and documented procedure.
There is also something increasingly valuable about retaining the original switch assembly in a classic Saab. A used replacement is, by definition, another old component. Even when it works perfectly at the time of installation, it may have spent thirty or forty years undergoing the same basic mechanical stresses as the part it replaces. Repairing the known worn element in the existing assembly removes at least some of that uncertainty.
A Used Switch Is No Longer the Only Answer
For years, one of the standard responses to an unavailable small internal component was to find another complete used assembly. That approach still makes sense in many situations, especially when the original part has suffered extensive damage or electrical failure. But it also creates an obvious problem with cars of this age: the donor part may be only marginally better than the one being removed.
The classic Saab 900 entered production in 1978 as a 1979 model, meaning the earliest examples covered by this kit have now accumulated nearly half a century of potential wear. Even the later 1993 cars are well into classic-car territory. A turn signal switch taken from a dismantled vehicle may have unknown mileage, an unknown storage history and no guarantee that its internal retaining grooves are substantially less worn.
The Skandix kit changes the equation. Instead of buying a complete used switch because of two worn internal engagement points, the existing unit can potentially be rebuilt with a fresh housing.
That does not make used parts irrelevant. Skandix itself lists examined used indicator stalk assemblies alongside the repair kit, while several original switch variants are shown as discontinued. What the kit provides is another choice, particularly for owners whose existing electrical mechanism remains functional and whose problem is limited to the stalk no longer staying engaged.
Not Every Old-Car Fault Needs a Complete New Assembly
The broader significance of parts like this is easy to miss precisely because the component is so small. Collector-car discussions naturally concentrate on engines, turbochargers, transmissions, body restoration and major interior work. Yet a classic used regularly on the road is also defined by dozens of ordinary interactions between driver and machine.
The turn signal must remain on when selected. Door locks should work. Window switches should respond. Heating controls should operate correctly. Wipers should move when requested. These are not glamorous restoration subjects, but a car with a long list of small unresolved faults becomes tiring to use regardless of how healthy its engine is.
This is where the current network of Saab specialists, small manufacturers and enthusiast-led developers has become particularly important. Some are reproducing unavailable mechanical parts. Others are reverse-engineering electronics, manufacturing trim pieces or creating carefully designed upgrades that preserve the character of the original car.
Earlier this year, for example, J&K Saabwerx developed a plug-and-play remote locking kit for classic Saab 900 models equipped with factory central locking. That project addressed a different need, but the underlying logic was similar: keep the original car usable without unnecessary irreversible modification.
For the indicator stalk, the philosophy is even more conservative. There is no new feature to add and no modernization to explain. A worn original mechanism is simply given the part it needs to work correctly again.
The Safety Aspect Should Not Be Ignored
A turn signal stalk that must be physically held in position is not merely inconvenient. It can force the driver to keep one hand occupied while steering through a turn, changing lanes or negotiating a complex junction.
Skandix specifically points out this risk in its announcement. The company also notes that such a defect can become an inspection issue where the correct operation of the turn signal control is checked. Inspection requirements naturally differ by country and jurisdiction, so owners should consult their local rules rather than assume a universal standard. The fundamental point, however, needs little interpretation: a control that cannot remain in its intended operating position is a fault worth repairing.
There is another practical issue familiar to owners of older vehicles. Small problems tend to become normalized. The driver develops a technique, compensates for the defect and eventually stops thinking about it. A failing indicator stalk becomes something to hold with a finger. A weak switch needs a particular touch. A broken interior component gets worked around.
That may keep the journey going, but it is not the same as keeping the car properly functional. The availability of a dedicated repair kit removes one reason to continue tolerating this particular defect.
The Correct Diagnosis Still Comes First
Before ordering the kit, owners should pay close attention to the exact symptom.
The repair is intended for a control stalk that will not remain in its fixed horizontal position, dropping or returning when the driver attempts to signal. The known cause addressed by the new housing is mechanical wear at the engagement points inside the original housing.
It will not repair failed internal electrical connections.
That difference deserves emphasis because an indicator system can fail in several ways. No flashing lamps, intermittent electrical operation or other circuit-related symptoms should not automatically be attributed to the worn housing described by Skandix. The repair kit is precise in both its purpose and its limitation.
For the right fault, however, it provides a far better answer than condemning an otherwise functional switch assembly. The existing internal components can be transferred into a new housing, lubricated as specified and reassembled using the hardware included in the kit.

Owners considering the repair should read those instructions before dismantling the switch, both to assess the required work and to avoid losing or damaging small internal components during disassembly.
A Small Part, but Exactly the Kind the Classic Saab 900 Needs
There is no shortage of dramatic Saab 900 restoration projects. Complete engine rebuilds, bare-shell body restorations and highly tuned Turbo conversions naturally receive attention. Yet keeping thousands of existing cars usable depends equally on less spectacular parts such as switch housings, clips, seals, trim pieces and electrical components.
The return of this repair kit is valuable because it solves a known problem without demanding the replacement of a complete assembly. Skandix identified that demand remained after its previous supplier stopped production, commissioned a cast replacement housing and returned the kit to its catalog.
For a 1979-1993 Saab 900 whose indicator stalk still works electrically but refuses to remain engaged, that creates a specific repair path where one had again begun to disappear.
And that is probably the most encouraging part of the story. The classic Saab 900 does not need every original component to remain indefinitely available as new old stock. What it needs is enough technical knowledge to identify the actual point of failure, enough demand to justify a solution, and specialists willing to manufacture the small parts that keep otherwise sound assemblies in service.
In this case, two worn grooves inside a turn signal switch no longer have to mean the end of the complete stalk.
