Robert Uhr, a name synonymous with Saab performance tuning, hails from a renowned Swedish family deeply rooted in motorsports and automotive innovation. Operating under Nordic Tuning Dalarna, Robert’s expertise in transforming ordinary Saabs into extraordinary race cars has earned him legendary status among enthusiasts. His recent interview with Swedish Geeks on YouTube provides a closer look at the man behind the machines, his methods, and his unyielding passion for Saab automobiles.

From Commuter Car to Track Dominator

The journey of Robert’s Saab 900 Time Attack car is a story of relentless innovation. What began as a simple commuter vehicle gradually morphed into a high-performance race car, undergoing a series of deliberate upgrades over time. Early experiments with turbochargers allowed Robert to test the limits of the engine’s capability, pushing its power output to levels few could imagine. Inspired by his father’s participation in Time Attack racing, Robert decided to take his project even further.

As the car evolved, it became a testament to Robert’s philosophy of building incrementally. Over time, the Saab was fitted with a front suspension system borrowed from a Saab 9-3 SS, and further enhancements such as Air Jack systems made it a true track-ready vehicle. Each modification reflected his deep understanding of the car’s mechanics and his desire to achieve peak performance while retaining the car’s original spirit.

Engineering Excellence: The Anatomy of a Saab 900 Time Attack Car

At the heart of Robert’s success is the meticulous engineering of his Saab 900. While the car’s exterior may resemble its humble origins, the underlying mechanics tell a different story. The nearly stock Saab 9000 2.3L engine, remarkably, produces 700 horsepower. This was achieved while retaining original components like pistons and rods, a testament to Saab’s exceptional engineering. Robert complemented this with a custom gearbox featuring straight-cut gears and optimized ratios, ensuring that every ounce of power could be harnessed efficiently on the track.

In addition to its drivetrain, the car features an innovative passive rear wing inspired by Formula 1’s DRS system. Designed to enhance stability and cornering, the wing operates based on speed and cornering forces, proving critical in setting lap records across Sweden.

The Art and Science of Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics have played a pivotal role in the success of Robert’s Time Attack car. Collaborating with an aerodynamics professor with wind tunnel expertise, Robert redesigned the front end and adjusted key angles for improved airflow. These changes resulted in significant performance gains, including a five-second improvement at Mantorp Park.

Robert’s approach to aerodynamics combines scientific precision with a touch of creative experimentation. While he draws inspiration from existing designs, much of the car’s aero package is a product of his own ingenuity. The results speak for themselves, as the car consistently outperforms its competition and holds track records at multiple circuits.

For over 15 years, Goran Aničić has been passionately focused on Saab automobiles and everything related to them. His initial encounter with Saab cars took place back in 2003 when the first Saab 9-3 and sedan version were introduced. At that moment, he was captivated by the car's Scandinavian design logic and top-notch engineering, and everything that followed stemmed from that first encounter. Later on, through his work at the editorial team of the Serbian automotive magazines "Autostart" and later "AutoBild," he had the opportunity to engage more closely with Saab vehicles. In 2008, he tested the latest Saab cars of that time, such as the Saab 9-3 TTiD Aero and Saab 9-3 Turbo X. In 2010, as the sole blogger from the region, he participated in the Saab 9-5ng presentation in Trollhättan, Sweden. Alongside journalists from around the world, he got a firsthand experience of the pinnacle of technological offerings from Saab at that time. Currently, Goran owns two Saabs: a 2008 Saab 9-3 Vector Sportcombi with a manual transmission, and a Saab 9-3 Aero Griffin Sport Sedan from the last generation, which rolled off the production line in Trollhättan in December 2011.
