Dension Gateway 500: The Expensive Saab 9-3 Audio Upgrade That Talks Directly to the Fiber-Optic System

How the GW51MO2 added USB and digital music integration to the 2003 to 2006 Saab 9-3 without replacing the factory ICM.

Connecting a modern music source to a 2003 to 2006 Saab 9-3 can be either very simple or surprisingly sophisticated. At the simple end, Saab’s factory AUX input still does exactly what it was designed to do. Add a Bluetooth receiver and almost any current phone can send music through the original audio system, although the car itself knows nothing about the track, artist or playlist being played.

There is also the much more Saab specific BT-Changer, developed in Hungary. It retains the factory ICM, adds wireless Bluetooth audio and communicates with the car sufficiently to provide useful integration with the SID and original controls. For owners whose priority is Spotify, internet radio, podcasts or other phone based audio while preserving the original dashboard, it remains one of the most practical solutions available today. We looked closely at its design and functionality in our earlier feature on the BT-Changer and its Hungarian Saab development story.

Then there is Dension Gateway 500, product code GW51MO2. Instead of sending analog audio into the Entertainment Head Unit through AUX, the Dension becomes part of the Saab’s optical infotainment network. It presents itself to the car as a CD changer, receives commands through the existing audio controls and adds USB, iPod, iPhone and auxiliary audio sources while leaving the Saab ICM and the rest of the factory installation in place. That architecture makes Gateway 500 one of the most technically interesting period upgrades ever offered for the early Saab 9-3 NG infotainment system.

Why the 2003 to 2006 Saab 9-3 Is Different

This subject resurfaced after the Italian Saab blog Saabmagazine published a useful overview of ways to connect a smartphone to the early 9-3 NG. Its author separates the straightforward AUX route from the considerably more sophisticated Dension installation, which is the part that deserves a closer technical look. The reason Dension had to develop such an elaborate interface lies in the architecture Saab introduced with the new 9-3. On the 2003 to 2006 cars, the visible ICM1, ICM2 or ICM3 is not simply a conventional DIN radio containing the entire audio system. The car instead uses several interconnected components, including the ICM, EHU, amplifiers and optional CD changer, with an optical data link between parts of the infotainment system.

Saab’s Workshop Information System describes this network as the O-bus, or optical bus, with modules passing information and digital audio around the system. The design allowed Saab to tightly integrate entertainment, steering wheel controls and vehicle information, but it also made later upgrades considerably more complicated than replacing a conventional radio.

That complication is familiar to anyone who has investigated modifying an early 9-3 dashboard. Even modern community projects have had to work around the same architecture. SaabPlanet recently covered the far more ambitious ICM4 project, which brings CarPlay and Android Auto into the original Saab 9-3 dashboard environment. Gateway 500 comes from a completely different technological era, but the engineering problem is fundamentally the same: how do you add new media technology without casually removing hardware that Saab integrated deeply into the car?

Gateway 500 Does Not Replace the Saab System

The clever part of Gateway 500 is that it does not attempt to replace Saab’s architecture. Dension’s own installation documentation states that Gateway 500 emulates a CD changer and uses the existing CD changer controls to access external audio sources. From the car’s point of view, Dension therefore behaves like equipment it already understands.

Dension’s solution went far beyond adding another audio input, turning the factory CD changer architecture into a gateway for digital music without disturbing Saab’s original ICM.

That makes the device fundamentally different from an AUX adapter. With AUX, the Saab receives an analog audio signal. The car does not inherently know what album is being played, what artist is selected or how the source device is organized. Gateway 500 participates in the control structure normally used by a CD changer, so it can add browsing and source selection while keeping the factory user interface involved.

Dension’s current Gateway 500 documentation still lists USB storage, iPod and iPhone playback, AUX input, menu based browsing, steering wheel control and music information display, although the amount of text available depends on the capabilities of the particular factory display. Dension’s current Gateway 500 product page confirms that the unit remains supported with documentation and firmware available.

Saab Was an Official Gateway 500 Application

This was not a compatibility trick discovered later by Saab owners. Dension designed specific installation configurations for the Saab 9-3 and documented them in the original Gateway 500 installation guide.

The manual includes separate DIP switch configurations for Saab 9-3 Rear CDC and Saab 9-3 Front CDC, showing that the company accounted for different factory CD changer arrangements. The same documentation shows how the Gateway is inserted into the optical path and identifies separate Car side and CDC side optical connections on the unit.

For anyone searching for one of these units today, the model number matters. The relevant original device is the Gateway 500 GW51MO2, generally recognizable by its silver enclosure. Several later Dension products use very similar names, but they should not automatically be assumed to work in the Saab.

Tech2 Is Part of the Installation

There is also one very Saab specific requirement that should not be overlooked. Dension explicitly states that on the Saab 9-3 a CD changer must be enabled with the service computer using an original CD changer. In practical Saab terms, this means Tech2 becomes part of the installation process when the car has not previously been configured for the CDC function.

This requirement fits the way Saab structured the infotainment system. The ICM already understands commands associated with an optical CD changer, while Gateway 500 depends on that existing functionality rather than creating a completely new source category in the car. Once the necessary CDC configuration exists, the Dension can occupy that role and make its external media sources available through a familiar Saab interface.

This is also an important distinction from BT-Changer. On the early 9-3, BT-Changer relies on the AUX audio path, so an inactive AUX input may have to be enabled with Tech2. Gateway 500 instead depends on the CD changer configuration. Both may involve Tech2, but for entirely different reasons.

The Original CD Changer Can Remain

Another useful feature of Gateway 500 is that installation does not necessarily require permanently giving up the original factory changer. The GW51MO2 has separate optical connections for the car and CDC sides, and Dension provides a mode selector that lets the user switch between Gateway 500 mode and Service/CDC mode.

The bypass function is also useful during diagnostics. Dension specifically recommends putting the unit into Service/CDC mode when the car is taken for servicing because otherwise a diagnostic system can detect an unknown device on the fiber optic network and report errors. In bypass mode, the Gateway effectively removes itself from normal operation and allows the factory CD changer to become available again.

This small detail says a great deal about the way Gateway 500 operates. A basic AUX receiver sits outside the car’s digital architecture and is largely invisible to diagnostics. Gateway 500 is sufficiently involved in the optical system that its presence matters when the car is interrogated electronically.

USB Is Probably the Most Interesting Feature Today

Viewed from 2026, Gateway 500’s USB support is arguably more useful than the iPod integration that originally made the device attractive.

The Gateway user guide specifies FAT32 USB storage and support for MP3, WAV and WMA files. The manual also describes menu based browsing by files, artists, albums and other categories, while playback can be controlled through the original audio system rather than from a separate portable player.

The current Dension product page also confirms that USB content can be browsed through the factory radio interface and controlled with head unit or steering wheel buttons where the vehicle supports those functions. Depending on the car and display, Gateway 500 can additionally show track related information.

This is where the Dension approach becomes considerably more sophisticated than sending audio through AUX. A USB drive is not merely providing sound to the Saab. Gateway 500 indexes the content and gives the factory infotainment controls a role in navigating it.

For an owner with a large locally stored music library, that functionality remains useful even though the product was designed long before streaming services became the dominant way people consume music.

Saab Even Required Its Own Text Configuration

Dension also recognized that text display on the Saab required particular handling. Its installation guide includes a specific Text Configuration section for Saab and Mercedes because not all factory head units support text in the same way.

After installation, cycling the Gateway mode selector brings up a configuration menu where display behavior can be adjusted. Dension’s chart marks +Paging and +Select as recommended Saab text configurations.

That detail is worth emphasizing because it prevents an overly broad claim frequently made about these interfaces. Gateway 500 can provide track information, but the exact behavior depends on the factory display and configuration. An ICM with suitable text capability can make much better use of the feature than a limited display configuration.

Do Not Confuse Gateway 500 With Gateway 500S BT

Anyone looking for a Gateway 500 today needs to pay close attention to the exact model being offered. Searches inevitably return the newer Gateway 500S BT, GW52MO2, which sounds like the obvious upgrade because it incorporates Bluetooth HFP and A2DP functionality.

For Saab owners, however, it is not the straightforward successor its name suggests.

Dension’s German distributor explicitly distinguishes between the original GW51MO2 Gateway 500 and the later GW52MO2 Gateway 500S BT. Its compatibility notes state that the older Gateway 500 supports several applications that the newer 500S BT does not, and Saab 9-3 and Saab 9-5 are specifically included on that list. Dension Germany’s Gateway 500S BT compatibility page makes the distinction unambiguous.

That means a Saab owner should not see “500S BT” in an advertisement and assume that newer automatically means better. For the Saab application discussed here, the significant part number is GW51MO2.

The Original Saab Gateway 500 Does Not Have Built In Bluetooth

This also exposes a second common misunderstanding. The original Gateway 500 itself does not contain the integrated Bluetooth hardware found in the later 500S BT.

Its core sources are USB, iPod or iPhone and AUX. The current Dension documentation continues to describe the unit in exactly those terms.

It is perfectly possible to connect a modern Bluetooth receiver to Gateway 500’s AUX input and use that receiver to stream music from a current smartphone. Doing so, however, changes the nature of the integration. The Bluetooth receiver is simply feeding analog audio into the Gateway AUX input, so Dension cannot retrieve Spotify metadata or navigate the phone’s streaming library from that signal.

The Gateway user guide makes this limitation clear. When AUX is selected, the display shows the external source, but control functions are not available for that source. The elaborate browsing features apply to supported digital media, not to arbitrary analog audio entering through AUX.

This is precisely where BT-Changer and Gateway 500 diverge most sharply. BT-Changer is designed around modern wireless phone use, while Gateway 500 was designed around digital media libraries, USB storage and Apple’s iPod ecosystem.

Smartphone Compatibility Needs a 2026 Reality Check

The Saabmagazine article describes connecting a smartphone directly through USB, which accurately reflects the type of devices Gateway 500 was designed to support, but modern phone behavior requires some qualification. Dension currently states that Android phones work over USB when Mass Storage Mode is available. Modern Android devices generally use newer USB protocols instead, so owners should not assume that plugging a current phone into the Gateway will make it behave like a flash drive.

Apple compatibility also reflects the era in which the product was developed. The Gateway user manual lists generations of iPod and iPhone support, while Dension later offered a Lightning adapter for devices using Apple’s Lightning connector. Its German documentation still identifies the LIA1GW0 adapter as the relevant accessory.

USB C iPhones appeared many years after Gateway 500 was designed, so compatibility should not be assumed simply because a physical adapter exists. The safest way to understand Gateway 500 today is therefore not as a universal 2026 smartphone interface, but as a high quality digital bridge between Saab’s early optical infotainment system and the USB and Apple media ecosystem for which Dension designed it.

Why Would Anyone Still Buy One?

For an owner who only wants wireless Spotify playback, Gateway 500 is difficult to justify against a BT-Changer or even a good AUX Bluetooth receiver. The more interesting case is an owner who wants to preserve a particularly original early 9-3 while adding digital media without replacing the Saab infotainment hardware.

Imagine a well preserved 2004 or 2005 9-3 Aero with ICM3, its factory amplifier system intact and no desire for a modern touchscreen in the dashboard. Gateway 500 allows that car to retain the Saab user interface while adding USB storage, digital music browsing and factory control interaction. The original ICM remains exactly where Saab placed it, while the Dension hardware can be hidden behind the dashboard or inside the glovebox. Dension still presents hidden installation as one of the product’s defining advantages.

The alternative today can go much further. Projects such as SaabPlanet’s ICM4 CarPlay and Android Auto conversion bring a genuinely modern interface into the same dashboard. But that is a different objective. ICM4 reimagines what the original Saab interface can become, while Gateway 500 deliberately leaves it alone and works behind it.

Treat the Optical System Carefully

Installation also requires more care than attaching a conventional analog adapter. The Gateway becomes part of the optical ring, so correct routing and connection of the fiber is essential. Dension’s installation documentation shows the optical fibers being removed from their original housings and transferred into the supplied connectors, with the light path passing through Gateway 500 before continuing to the other components.

An interruption in that optical path can affect more than the Dension itself because the network relies on a complete communication chain. This is one reason a properly installed Gateway 500 is a very different proposition from a small Bluetooth receiver plugged into the center console.

Gateway 500 or BT-Changer?

The comparison is ultimately less about which device is universally better and more about what each system was designed to accomplish.

BT-Changer is the stronger choice for an owner whose priority is current smartphone use, wireless streaming and convenient interaction with services such as Spotify. Its design starts with Bluetooth and adapts it specifically to the Saab environment.

Gateway 500 is the more elaborate solution for an owner interested in digital USB and iPod integration, CD changer emulation, factory control logic and direct participation in the Saab’s optical infotainment network. It was expensive because Dension did not merely add another analog input. It developed hardware that could live inside an already complex factory system and persuade the Saab that contemporary digital media was simply another source it already knew how to control.

That distinction remains the most interesting thing about Gateway 500. Saab built the early 9-3 infotainment system around tightly integrated modules and optical communication. Dension’s answer was not to bypass that engineering or remove it, but to use its existing CD changer logic as the entry point for an entirely different generation of music storage.

Today, the GW51MO2 Gateway 500 is no longer the most convenient route to smartphone audio in a Saab 9-3, and anyone specifically looking for Bluetooth should understand that before paying the substantial price these units can still command. For the right early 9-3, however, it remains one of the most technically complete period upgrades available because it keeps Saab’s original hardware, original controls and original optical architecture involved in the process rather than treating them as obstacles.
