The Saab Sonett II Prototype: A Rare Swedish Icon Hits the Market
A rare piece of Saab’s storied history has emerged, captivating enthusiasts and collectors alike. The 1966 Saab Sonett II, one of only 28 pre-production models ever built, is now for sale at Kaiser Classic in Sweden. With a listing price of 995,000 SEK (over $90,000 USD), this extraordinary car is set to become one of the most expensive Saabs ever sold.
This meticulously restored Sonett II carries not just its unique fiberglass body but also a legacy intertwined with Erik “Carlsson on the Roof” Carlsson, Saab’s legendary rally driver.
A Storied Past: From Sweden to the United States and Back
The 1966 Saab Sonett II was designed as a compact sports car that showcased Saab’s innovative engineering. Its pre-series production of just 28 cars in 1966 marked a pivotal moment for the brand, laying the foundation for the 1,868 production models that followed between 1966 and 1969.
This specific Sonett II, serial number 19, was built in April 1966 and immediately pressed into service as a promotional vehicle. Shipped to the United States in early 1967, it made its debut at the New York Auto Show, where it caught the attention of car enthusiasts and critics alike.
From there, the car toured the United States, driven by Erik Carlsson himself. Carlsson performed dazzling stunts at autocross and slalom events, demonstrating the car’s agility and unique engineering. The Sonett II even became a star attraction at various automotive showcases, representing the pinnacle of Saab’s innovative spirit.
After years of hard use, the car retired to a collection in Massachusetts, where it languished until 2016, when a dedicated Saab enthusiast acquired it and returned it to Sweden. Under the current owner’s meticulous care, the car underwent a full restoration, restoring its iconic appearance and functionality.
Design and Engineering: Ahead of Its Time
The 1966 Saab Sonett II exemplifies Saab’s commitment to lightweight design and efficiency. Its fiberglass body, paired with an advanced steel box chassis, allowed the car to remain agile and responsive. The 841cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine produced 60 horsepower at 5,200 RPM, modest by today’s standards, but perfectly suited to the car’s featherlight 745 kg weight.
The interior reflects mid-century Swedish design—functional, minimalist, and driver-focused. Its four-speed synchronized gearbox, operated via a column-mounted shifter, added to its unique charm. The car’s compact proportions and precise handling made it an ideal contender for the autocross and slalom events popular in the U.S. during the 1960s.
A Meticulous Restoration for a True Collector’s Car
When the Sonett II was rediscovered in Massachusetts, it was in poor condition after decades of neglect. The current owner, recognizing the car’s historical significance, undertook a comprehensive restoration. Every detail, from its original fiberglass bodywork to the two-stroke engine, was painstakingly brought back to life.
The restoration also included refinishing the iconic red paint and equipping the car with period-correct Pirelli tires. Today, the Sonett II stands as a shining example of Saab’s craftsmanship and engineering prowess, ready to delight its next owner.
One of the Most Expensive Saabs Ever
With an asking price of 995,000 SEK, this Sonett II is poised to become one of the most valuable Saabs in history. While the price is steep, it reflects the car’s rarity, pristine restoration, and unparalleled historical significance.
For comparison, a 1987 Saab 900 Convertible sold in the United States for approximately 1.5 million SEK ($140,000) two years ago, currently holding the record for the most expensive Saab ever sold. However, this Sonett II, with its connection to Erik Carlsson and its exclusive pre-production status, is a strong contender for the title.
A Testament to Saab’s Legacy
This 1966 Sonett II isn’t just a car—it’s a symbol of Saab’s bold innovation and dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering. For Saab enthusiasts, the chance to own such a rare and historically significant vehicle is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The Sonett II is more than just a classic sports car. It represents Saab’s golden era, where creativity and performance met in perfect harmony. Its listing at Kaiser Classic has already drawn interest from collectors worldwide, cementing its place as one of the most desirable Saab models ever.
As it awaits its next owner, this Sonett II serves as a reminder of Saab’s ingenuity and adventurous spirit. With its unique history, impeccable restoration, and groundbreaking design, it’s no surprise that this car is poised to make headlines—and perhaps even set a new record.
WOW!!! What a beautiful car!
Även om skicket är väldigt fint, vad det verkar, så är nästan sjusiffrigt väl optimistiskt. Men har man inte behov att snabbt sälja så kan man ju alltid hoppas som säljare.
Prototyp är väl lite att ta i. Tidig seriebil…
1965 års navkapslar. Men det är ju en prototyp
i had a friend with a shelby cobra and the only car that could beet him on a vermont winding road was a sonett
Blir en sådan här vagn din ?! Nästan nej!, det är en allmän museé sak där varje rullad decimeter räknas och du förvaltar den.
True automotive beauty.
Fin Känsla.
Well, this is a bit premature. You could ask ANY price you want. I’ve got serial number 021 and I’m asking $5.6 million. Does that mean it’s the highest price Saab ever???? No It means I’m an idiot, (but you knew that already 🤣 )
Maybe that is what makes them Saab people.
My problem until I found a rust free 1973 99 LE I have always worked with rust
So if you have a really nice car how much is it worth
Problem most Saab guys don’t have a lot of extra money floating around
