This 1974 Sonett III serial number 2020 of 2,500 produced. It is an incredibly honest and 100 percent rust-free car and has lived almost its entire life in San Diego, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, and Florida with six Saab-crazy owners from new. Its history is fully documented and includes a binders full of receipts and records to document the 82K miles, and a hand-written fuel and maintenance log is also included.
One of the previous owners even included a spreadsheet of the 13 Sonett III’s he looked at across the country in 1988 before buying this on the advice of famed Sonett expert and racer Arne Gunderson after he inspected it and proclaimed it the best he’d seen. The orange paint is in good driver condition, with the typical Sonett fiberglass “waves” and some cracks/star-checks, but is very glossy and highly presentable. All of the original books are with the car as well as the full historical binder. The mileage is verifiable by past service records and registration slips. The original tan interior is in exceptional condition, including the adjustable lumbar supports and even a set of vintage coco mats. In 1995, #2020 won third place in the concours at the Saab Owner’s Convention held in Atlanta.
Another fifteen years on, it is an exceptionally well maintained and sensibly uprated Sonett III that loves to be driven. As Saab nuts will do, #2020 has been suitably uprated throughout the years into an impressive performer. Within the last 200 miles, the original engine was rebuilt, new brake pads and wheel cylinders were installed, the A/C was repaired and re-charged, and various other maintenance and repairs at a combined cost of over $5,000 were completed. Invoices for this work are included. It now runs and drives very well, everything works, and it handles very nicely. Unlike 95% of these cars, this one has a beautiful chassis with zero rust.
